Planet Earth

  • Earth is the third planet from the Sun.
The distance of the Earth from the Sun is 92,917,931.7 miles. It takes 8 min 19 sec for the sunlight to reach the Earth.
  • Earth is the largest terrestrial planet.
The diameter of the Earth is 12,753 km (7,926 miles) making it the largest of the four terrestrial planets. The other three terrestrial planets are Mercury, Venus and Mars.
  • Earth is the densest planet in the Solar System.
The core of the planet Earth is Iron and nickel this makes the planet to be dense. The core of the Earth is denser than the crust.
  • Earth’s magnetic field is powerful.
The molten metallic core of iron and nickel and the rapid rotation of the Earth create a powerful magnetic field. The magnetic field protects the Earth from the solar wind.
  • Earth is a sphere.
The Earth is not round but spherical. Due to the fast rotation of the earth, there is a slight bulge around the equator. And, the North and South Pole are slightly flat.
  • Earth is composed of four layers.
The four layers are inner core, outer core, mantle and crust.
  • Earth is the only planet that has tectonic plates.
The tectonic plates are African plate, Antarctic plate, Eurasian Plate, Indo-Australian Plate, North American Plate, Pacific Plate and South American Plate.
  • There is tide on Earth.
The tide on Earth is caused because of the gravity between the Earth and its natural satellite, Moon.
  • A year on Earth is 365.2422 days.
One year is 365 and ¼ day. The ¼ day is added to become a day. That extra day is added to the month of February and that year is called leap year. The leap year happens every four years.
  • Earth is tilted about 23.5º.
The tilt of Earth on its axis makes it possible to have different seasons on earth. The sunlight falls on Earth at different places depending upon the tilt.
  • Earth’s atmosphere is divided into 5 sections.
Troposphere (0-13 km), Ozone Layer (13-25 km), Stratosphere (25-50 km), Mesosphere (50-75 km) and Thermosphere (75-150 km).
  • The planet Earth has ozone layer.
The ozone layer is made of oxygen. It protects the Earth from harmful UV rays.
  • Earth is nicknamed blue planet.
70% of the planet Earth is covered with water. From space, the earth looks like a blue marble with patches of brown, green and white swirls. Brown and green are land. The white is the cloud.
  • Earth is also nicknamed Goldilocks planet.
In the story “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” Goldilocks liked that was right for her. Like the bed, she slept. The porridge she selected was neither too nor hot. Similarly, earth is in the right position for life to sustain.
  • Earth has one natural satellite.
The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth.
